I posted this video about this time last year, but it’s worth repeating. I have since come to the conclusion that rotating your files is nothing less than your number one annual organizing habit,  beating out rotating your seasonal clothes. Paper is the most insidious of clutter and the most logical time to advance sitting files to sleeping files and sleeping files to dead files is at the end of tax season.

Not only does this keep your surfaces and file cabinets uncluttered in your home office, but it insures that the older sleeping files in your storage room eventually leave and leave safely. As always, if you are completely confident that you can reliably retrieve your statements digitally, then you can toss your tax supporting material now. If, however, you have any doubts and want to hang on to your old files just in case, then for heaven’s sake, store them more remotely. Remote need merits remote location.
