There’s something about March that makes you ready for a fresh start. The days are getting longer, the air feels lighter, and suddenly all that winter “stuff” starts to feel suffocating. If you’ve been wanting to declutter, but don’t know where to start, Matt Baier Organizing has some tips- and we’re always happy to help you hands-on! Instead of trying to tackle your entire home, focus on the things that make the most sense right now—the items you can let go of in March and honestly won’t even think about come April.

Why March Is the Perfect Time to Declutter

March sits in a unique sweet spot: You’re coming out of winter hibernation. Spring cleaning motivation is kicking in. You haven’t fully transitioned into busy spring/summer schedules yet. There are still some bad-weather days that are perfect for taking on indoor tasks. All of this makes March the ideal time to clear out what no longer fits your life—or the season ahead. Now let’s look at some practical March decluttering contenders.

Bulky Winter Clothing You Didn’t Wear

March is a common month to begin your closet’s seasonal switch-over. Before you pack winterwear away, pause. Look at each of your winter items and ask: Did I actually wear this this season? Did I avoid it for a reason (fit, comfort, style)? Be honest. If you didn’t reach for that sweater, coat, or pair of boots all winter, chances are you won’t next year either. Let it go now instead of storing it (and repeating the cycle!).

Expired or Unused Winter Products

Winter tends to come with a buildup of products like lotions and heavy creams. Seasonally-scented bath products. Lip balms scattered throughout your house, car and bags to combat chapped lips. Cold/flu remedies. March is a great time to go through your bathroom and check expiration dates, reassess products that you tried but didn’t love, rediscover items you forgot you even had- and may never use. If you didn’t use it during peak winter, you likely won’t use it at all. Toss your expired and unwanted, opened products. Unused products that you won’t use yourself make for great donations or future gifts-to-give

Last Year’s Paper Clutter

March is right in the middle of tax season—which makes it the perfect time to deal with paper piles. Sort through old mail, receipts from last year, outdated bills and all those pesky, random paperwork stacks making your home seem messier than necessary. Chances are a lot of that paper can go. Shred or recycle anything you don’t need, and organize what you do. You’ll head into April (and tax deadlines) feeling much more in control.

Accessories You Skipped All Season

Scarves, gloves, hats—winter accessories add up fast. But here’s the truth- you probably wore the same few favorites on repeat. Gather all your winter accessories and ask: Which ones did I actually wear? Which ones just sat there? Donate the extras. Keep only what you truly used and loved.

Pantry Items You’ve Been Ignoring

March is a great time for a quiet pantry reset. Check for expired foods, items you bought but never used or seasonal products you won’t reach for anymore. You probably won’t have much use for those candy canes or cute hot chocolate mixes you were gifted come April. Be realistic—if it’s been sitting there for months untouched, it’s probably not part of your routine.

Leftover Holiday Clutter

Yes, even in March, it’s often still hanging around. Look for those gift bags and packaging you saved “just in case.” Recycle the ones in bad shape and excess then coral the rest into a designated home to use next year and prevent future accumulation. Gather up any decorations that never made it back to their off-season homes and resettle them where they belong. Anything broken, worn or unwanted can go. Same goes for random holiday leftovers tucked in drawers- seasonal napkins, plates, arts and crafts, cookie tins, etc. Keep a small, reasonable supply if you want—but let go of the excess.

Shoes You Avoided All Winter

Shoes are easy to ignore, but they take up a lot of space. Go through your winter shoes and ask: Were these comfortable? Did I actually choose these over others? Were they good in the winter weather? If the answer is “no,” it’s time to say goodbye.

As March Madness comes to an end, so should the accumulation of clutter in your home! Decluttering in March isn’t about doing everything—it’s about doing the right things. When you let go of what you didn’t use this winter, you free up space, reduce visual clutter and make room for a lighter, simpler spring season. And the best part? By April, your home already feels refreshed—without the stress of a full spring cleaning marathon!
