Halloween may be scary for the kids, but for adults the scary starts after the holiday has come and gone. If you’re a big fan of “Spooky Season,” like me, you’ve probably spent the past month hanging up decorations- indoors and out. Maybe you have one (or more!) of those Home Depot giant skeletons that I envy each year. Perhaps you’re a fan of ghosts and faux cobwebs. If you have children in the house, that almost certainly means costumes. It may also mean trick-or-treating supplies, candy, boo baskets, the whole nine. While the festivity is fun, cleaning it up certainly is not. Here at Matt Baier organizing we have organizing tips to help Halloween cleanup feel less scary.
Don’t be scared by your decorations
Halloween decorations can be a huge category. It may encompass outdoor décor, indoor, trunk or treat decorations, and more. Make life easier for yourself before and after the holiday. Having proper, assigned storage for your Halloween decorations makes it easier and less frightening to set up and breakdown each year. Since you probably only pull these items out once a year, they can be stored remotely. Attics and basements are great options for remote storage.
Costumes can be spooky, putting them away doesn’t have to be
If you and/or your kids love to dress up for Halloween, you’ve probably accumulated quite a collection of outfits. There are a number of great options to help prevent your costumes from cluttering your home. Similar to your decorations, one option is to assign a designated dress-up bin where you can retire old costumes to. While your family may not re-wear them for Halloween, they’ll still be available for dress-up fun. The playroom is a perfect home. Another idea is to donate old costumes or give them away to a friend to use. These would be pending items. A convenient spot to house your pending items is the garage. You can set up a “Donation Depot” and a “Give to Friend” bin. Once your bin fills up, or you’ll be seeing your friend or going to a donation drop-off area, you’re likely to remember to grab the items.
Candies & toys & treats, oh my!
Personally, I love the Halloween season for the decorations, the spooky weather, the movies and tv shows, the costumes and the events and the tricks. But anyone with children in their life (or a sweet tooth!) knows that one of the favorite hallmarks of Halloween is the treats. Lots and lots of treats!
As time goes on it seems there are a growing number of ways to accumulate candies and trinkets, far more than just the traditional trick-or-treating. Now we have parties- at school and with friends, trunk or treat events, parades, boo baskets, and more! And even if you don’t have trick-or-treat aged children, don’t forget all the extra candy that’s leftover if everything hasn’t been given out at the end of the night. At the end of the night you’re likely left to deal with at least one- candy, trinkets, trick-or-treat baskets, a candy basket, boo baskets. Don’t get spooked! Toys and trinkets from your kid’s Halloween haul can be stored with your décor or party supplies and be used for boo baskets, goodie bags, or décor for next year. They can also be donated along with costumes. As for candy, don’t let it get lost and spoiled in baskets, bedrooms or storage areas. Allot a designated home in your kitchen or pantry. That way it can be a fun treat in the months to come!
Potion to put away party supplies
Halloween parties are some of my favorites. Whether it’s a party at school, at a friend’s, a community event, they’re always sure to be fun. Hosting the party can be just as much fun. Cleaning up afterwards, however, not so much. Hosting a party, especially a themed party like Halloween, means lots of supplies. You may have specialty tablecloths, plates, napkins, cups, centerpieces, extra goodie bag contents and more. Having a designated home in your storage area for party supplies is a huge help. When the party is over you can easily return any leftover supplies in good condition to this location. You can even subcategorize by holiday or event if volume requires.
Fear not this spooky season, Matt Baier Organizing is here to help you with the skeletons in your closet! No, not the figurative ones. The plastic ones you love to display on Halloween and loathe to find a home for once the holiday has passed. Hope everyone had a happy Halloween. Follow our tips so that tomorrow isn’t quite as scary!
