For those of you who prefer to read, here is a transcription of my video with this title.
The holidays are supposed to be a joyous time. Right? Well I had a neighbor once who went all out for Christmas. He’d set up a Santa sleigh, reindeer- the works. To hear him grumble as he unpacked and set up, his experience sounded anything but joyous. If that sounds at all familiar, here are some tips that will help.
Holidays Made Easy: Jumpstart box
First up is what I call the Jumpstart Box. If you do a lot of holiday decorating and you’re overwhelmed with where to begin, this is your answer. It holds a few key decorations- i.e an Advent calendar, menorah, this wide red ribbon with red paper clips for your greeting cards. That way they have a place to go as they start coming in.
Holidays Made Easy: Portable card writing solution
Next up is a portable card writing solution. I use a shallow basket. In it I keep the essentials: envelopes, stamps, mailing address labels, a pen, return address stamp, and of course, cards. This can be a big project, but if you break it up into a few minutes at the dining table here, a few minutes at the couch there, before you know it it gets done.
Holidays Made Easy: Store compatibility
Here’s a tip for my old neighbor: store compatibility! Here’s an example of what I mean by that. This inexpensive combination of flip-top totes and plastic shelves from the Home Depot fit together perfectly two totes per shelf. You can get those giant bins, but they tend not to be very shelf friendly, so you have to stack them. Stacking makes them inaccessible. This is what my neighbor did. When you can take advantage of storing vertically, you can open up horizontal floor space. This floor space is prime real estate for things like big plastic reindeer.
Holidays Made Easy: Reveal don’t conceal
I ordinarily always recommend clear bins: reveal, don’t conceal. However, for the holidays you can use the colored ones, as you’re only accessing them once a year. You can choose to use corresponding colors for each holiday. Maybe red for Christmas, orange for Halloween or blue for Hanukkah.
Holidays Made Easy: No-tangle lights storage
Finally, I’ve got a tip for all of those holiday lights that tend to tangle up. Boy did my neighbor hate those! Certainly don’t try stuffing them back in the tiny little boxes they came in. Ziploc bags work wonders. Wrap your strings of lights around a piece of cardboard to prevent tangling. Then simply put the cardboard into a gallon Ziploc bag. Line the bags up in a bin for easy access and no tangling.
