This post comes to you from one of  our talented team organizers Gabrielle “Gab” House.

Items stored in a bathroom are typically ones that you only realize you need in the moment you need them. For example, band-aids and Neosporin when you get a cut. Travel-sized products when you’re last minute packing. Cold medicine when you wake up sick. Toilet paper when it runs out. Ibuprofen when you have a headache. When your bathroom closet is a mess, it becomes difficult to find these items in a pinch. It’s inconvenient to make an unplanned run to the store in these moments. It also wastes money, time and products when you repurchase an item that you already own. Sometimes more than once or twice!

When you’re already sick, the last thing you need is the headache of digging through a disorganized closet for ibuprofen. If you find yourself dreading opening the door to your overflowing bathroom closet, you’re in good company! Follow the simple steps below to create an organized bathroom closet that’s easy to navigate!

Five Simple Steps to an Efficient Bathroom Closet

Step 1: Set the stage

Give yourself a clear work surface. As always, it’s your number one organizing tool, and this extends to an organized bathroom closet! Once you’ve created a clear surface, remove everything from closet. It allows you to spread out, prioritize, and process, which makes it much easier to see what you have.

Step 2: Sort

Sort everything that you’ve removed from your closet into categories. Common categories found in a bathroom closet include first-aid, medications, makeup, hair products, skin products, cleaning products, paper products, etc.

Step 3: Edit

Discard any expired products, empty products, and/or products damaged beyond use. After reviewing what’s leftover, you may decide to donate or gift unwanted and excess products in good condition that you no longer want or will not be able to use by their expiration date.

Step 4: Prioritize

Prioritize. Identify “homeless” items that do not need to be stored in your bathroom closet and set them aside to relocate. When a storage area is already disorganized, we often shove things there to hide them, even if they don’t belong. An organized closet will help prevent this in the future! Now, identify which of the remaining categories need to be most accessible, and which can me stored less accessibly. You’re one step away from an organized bathroom closet!

Step 5: Clear Systems

It’s time to put systems in place, the final step before you have a truly organized bathroom closet! A good option is clear, stackable bins, which allow for practical, space-efficient and visual storage of your products. You can label your bins by category using a Brother P-touch label maker. With proper labels, it’s no longer a guessing game when you open your bathroom closet! Items nearing their expiration date should be closest to the front of their respective bins. Bins containing frequently accessed categories should be shelved at eye level so that they can be easily reached. Overflow categories, such as extra toilet paper, tissues, or cleaning products can be stored less accessibly on a top shelf. Similarly, categories like travel products or infrequently used appliances can also be stored up top or down low if necessary.

It cannot be stated often enough – circulation prevents accumulation! If you follow the five steps above, you should find yourself with an organized bathroom closet. Once you can easily see what you and have and find what you need, you’re unlikely to accumulate excess!
