Free Up Space With Freecycle

freecycle_logoDo you ever see a dumpster with stuff in it that doesn’t seem to belong? Maybe it’s some perfectly good furniture, some sheets of plywood, or some lightly used office supplies. It’s the type of stuff that makes you think, “well I can’t put this to good use, but I’m sure SOMEBODY could.” That’s the type of scenario that’s perfect for freecycle.

Freecycle is a non-profit online organization that connects unwanted items with those in need. It’s kind of like Craigslist, except everything is free. Sometimes, the space an item occupies is more valuable to the homeowner than the item itself. Time to let go.  When an item’s value comes from its absence, then offering it for free, makes more sense. It also makes it more attractive.  And no haggling!

Why do freecycle instead of call a charity to pick it up? It doesn’t always make sense, but if you want to be more specific about who might be interested, you can include that in your ad. For example, boat parts for boat owners, baby supplies for mothers, art supplies for art teachers. You can also arrange pick up more at your convenience, than the charity’s.

Using freecycle is easy. Just go to freecycle.org, find a group in your area, sign up, and start posting, either under OFFER or WANTED. It’s important to be honest with your descriptions. You don’t want to waste anyone’s time. I recommend uploading a photo. It always helps. Click Make the post and wait for responses in your email. The right person will come along to give your unwanted item a good home.

By the way, don’t worry TOO much about what goes in a dumpster like THIS GUY did.  Most of it probably belongs there, but when it doesn’t, think of freecycle.
