Most of us are familiar with the concept of “Spring Cleaning,” which typically refers to cleaning up around the house and purging old or unwanted belongings. You may have also heard of “Fall Cleanup,” which traditionally refers to landscaping and preparing your lawn for the winter. Have you ever considered taking advantage of the autumn season to prepare both your lawn and your home for winter? Why? Winter often means hunkering down indoors. It can mean hosting visiting family and friends. Maybe your kids are coming home from college. Perhaps you’re travelling out of town for the winter holidays. If you’re up in the northeast like us, you probably want to be able to park your car in the garage for the impending snow and frigid temperatures. No matter the scenario, there are plenty of reasons for anyone and everyone to want a clean, decluttered and organized home this fall. Here are a few reason’s we should all “fall” into spring cleaning this autumn.
Clean up to hunker down
As the colder months approach, it’s the time to prepare to spend more time indoors. Take advantage of the autumn months to create a cozy, clean environment that you’ll want to spend time in come the chilly winter months. If you have kids returning home from college or adult kids coming home for holidays, they’re sure to appreciate this too- especially if you’ve been using their rooms as temporary storage spaces!
Eliminate clutter to eliminate hosting stress
If you’re anything like my mother, you may be hosting multiple gatherings this holiday season. If you’re hosting meals, having a reliable place to find and return dishes, glasses and silverware. This makes setup and cleanup much easier and more efficient. The same goes for decorations. If you’re having overnight guests, you’ll also want to have clean guest room/s ready so that you’re not rushing to make your home hospitable while also putting together a table setting, meal, décor, etc.. Hosting is is time-consuming enough- set yourself up for ease and success by getting organized now!
Organize for a stress-free holiday vacation
Maybe you’re not hosting any winter soirées. Perhaps instead you’re taking a trip next season! It’s far simpler to pack your bags if you’ve decluttered and done away with unwanted excess. Whether that be clothing, luggage, toiletries, electronics, etc.. The less clutter in your home, the easier it is to pack to be away from home. This also has tremendous benefits upon your return. Jetlagged or not, nobody enjoys arriving back to a cluttered home after a relaxing trip away. Returning to an organized home with systems in place for dirty laundry, delegated spots for luggage, and assigned locations for any travel keepsakes, makes reacclimating to normal life far easier. Additionally, if you plan to hire a house and/or pet-sitter, it’s much easier to provide clear instructions if everything in your house has an assigned home! Get organized now so that you enjoy coming home as much as you enjoy leaving!
Don’t freeze, free up space!
Last but definitely not least, get your car in the garage! Here at Matt Baier Organizing we’re based in the Northeast. More often than not, that means snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Nobody wants to scrape snow and ice off of their car in freezing temps, in the dark, only to commute to work in a still-cold car. Save yourself the misery of adding those freezing cold extra minutes of clearing your car to your morning commute. prepare your garage for the winter by decluttering now.
