The winter holidays have come and gone. Don’t feel bad if that means your home is now in disarray. That’s totally normal- but it doesn’t have to be! Here are a few tips on how to deal with the odds and ends and, let’s face it, clutter that takes over your home during the holiday season. Organizing for the post-holiday season ensures a smoother set-up and take-down of the holidays in your home. The winter holidays are a time of joy, decoration, festivity, gifts, cooking, company- the list goes on. By the end of it, we’re all a little weary. The end of the holidays means back to school, back to work, back to reality. The last thing we want to do is clean up the dreaded holiday mess. Below are three major holiday categories that commonly lead to questions. As a matter of fact, all three are in my top five “homeless” categories, which you can learn more about in my video,  Organizing the Top 5 Homeless Categories.

Gifts to give/donations

Gifts you intended to give, but forgot? Presents you received and don’t have a need or want for? Keep in mind the golden rule of gifts: Just because somebody gives you something it does not obligate you to keep it. It truly is the thought that counts more than the gift itself. It’s always appropriate to say thank you, but it is not necessary to say “I will cherish this forever.” A loved one doesn’t want to burden you with a gift that is not of value to you. It’s a better choice to pass it along to a place where it is valued. Assign a home for future “gifts to give” – bonus points if you make a note of who gave you the “re-gifts” in the first place- to avoid giving them back to the original giver! Additionally, assign a home for donations. I recommend establishing a “Donation Depot.” Somewhere that you can easily compile donations and, when it fills up, easily transfer to your car to take away. Whether it’s a bottle of wine, a set of festive napkins, a toy your child wasn’t fond of- or received multiples of, etc.…Don’t let the holidays enable unnecessary accumulation!

Keepsakes

We tend to accumulate a lot of sentimental items during the winter holiday season. Whether it’s your kids’ holiday arts and crafts, holiday cards from friends and family, sentimental gifts/notes from loved ones, or photos taken at a holiday party, the keepsakes add up. These items make your home feel festive, decorated and full of love during the holidays. However, without a designated home to return to come the new year, they may make your home feel cluttered. It can be a headache trying to figure out where to put them all. After all, they’re meaningful and something you’ll want to look back on in years to come, but you don’t need to see them everyday. So designate a home for your holiday keepsakes – perhaps a labeled plastic bin that can be stored remotely in your attic or basement. Make sure you leave room for this category to grow! You’ll have many holidays in your future!

Holiday décor

Have designated and labeled homes for all of your holiday décor to make for easy take-out and put-back each holiday season. Large, stackable bins are prime candidates for this job. Make things even easier for yourself and go with color coordinated bins (i.e. red/green for Christmas, blue for Hanukkah, etc.). Label each bin – know exactly which decorations go in each bin. This removes the headache of figuring out how to get everything back in its proper place. With this system in place, you’ll know where each and every item is and where to return it to at the end of the season. No more digging around a dark attic for your decorations or trying to jam everything into scattered boxes after the season has ended! Your stackable, labeled bins can be stored remotely in the same place each year so that you know exactly where to find and put everything.

Set yourself up for success – and a happy new year!

Simplify your life this post-holiday season. Everything feels so much easier if you have a process and a home for everything to return to in the new year. You’ll be left with no questions or questionable decisions that make you want to avoid the task of “cleaning up” the holidays altogether. You’ll also find it much easier to locate and extract all of your holiday items the following year. Don’t let disorganization bring on the winter blues. Organize for the post-holiday season – we’re always happy to help!
