What Your Time Management System May Be Missing
If the conclusion you are drawing from the combination of this title and this photo, is that your Time Management System is missing Post-It notes, then go ahead and laugh. There’s a little more to it than that, but I stand by my Post-It’s. There are a lot of time management systems out there, both paper and digital, but I have found that NONE of them facilitate prioritizing, especially sudden RE-prioritizing.
“You Wouldn’t Believe How Much I Have Already Thrown Out!”
I’m in my tenth year as a professional organizer and clients have told me this statement more than any other. You wouldn't believe how many times people have told me, “You wouldn't believe how much I have already thrown out!” First, I would. Second, it’s roughly the equivalent of a smoker telling me, “you wouldn’t believe how many times I quit smoking.” It’s irrelevant. Unless you analyze the reasons for the bad habit and develop a realistic plan for maintaining a good one, the bad habit will most likely return. Here are 7 tips to make your next decluttering efforts really count.
Travel the World or Pay Storage Company?
Self_storage_unitsI have always contended that outside storage can be a huge waste of money. I received this letter from a fellow blogger, who serves up a hefty helping of further evidence. Enjoy.
My Case Against Bulletin Boards
OK, how can I possibly take issue with an organizing institution as common as the bulletin board? It’s because a bulletin board is a nice idea for organizing, that doesn’t actually work.
Do You Need a Clutter Broker?
I’ve just come to the realization that the job my team of organizers and I do is that of a clutter broker. What do I mean by this? Just as there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all mortgage, there’s no thing as a one-size-fits-all clutter solution. A mortgage broker has the job of brokering the right mortgage to suit your needs and a professional organizer has the job of brokering the right balance of keep, toss, donate, and sell. Here’s how.
Getting Organized for 2014
Getting organized is a very popular New Year’s resolution, but like so many resolutions, it can be a very difficult one to keep, without some simple guidelines. Here are some simple guidelines.
What’s the Point of Crystal?
Can someone please explain the value of crystal to me? I just don’t get it. I see crystal in a lot in clients’ homes and it never represents anything good.

The Wrapster by Quirky makes a great stocking stuffer for iPhone users. It wraps your earbuds up in a neat little bundle AND it provides a stand for your iPhone.
What To Do When Your To-Do’s Have Been Grounded
When I have a long list of to-do’s, there is a technique I use on the tougher ones that makes them easier. I call it taxi to takeoff.
Car Organizing Stuff I Love
Just drove back from a Thanksgiving weekend with my wife and father-in-law, after visiting Mum in Maine. For reasons that are unimportant and uninteresting, I found myself driving another car over the weekend and immediately found myself missing certain organizing conveniences from my car, including a couple of the ones I am about to list. This is, by no means, a comprehensive list of perfect car organizing tips, just a few I happen to use and like.
Interview: Jennifer Morehead of Moveboxer
The Matt Baier team has helped many people through the home transition process from getting ready to put the home on the market all the way through to unpacking at the new house. I interviewed Moveboxer CEO Jennifer Morehead about the challenges of moving.
Why You Have More Space in Your File Cabinet Than You Think
The term "thickening agent" generally refers to paint and food products, but you might be surprised at how many thickening agents are in your file folders. Unlike gumbo, however, your files are much better off without these thickening agents. Here are six examples:
Why Am I Filing My T-Shirts?
am filing my t-shirts because I learned a terrific tip from CPO Alejandra Costello. She stores her t-shirts vertically, so you can get a better view of them. Brilliant! Here is her video explaining how she does it and the tool she uses. If you are too lazy to watch her 4:47 minute video or too lazy and too cheap to order her tool, like I am, here’s what you can do.
One Of The Best Things About Being Organized
One of the best things about being organized is being ready to do things spontaneously. You may not think of organized people as spontaneous, but to me, that’s kind of the whole point.
Creating Calm from Chaos
A Guest Post from Arline Melzer I’ve seen firsthand how Matt Baier Organizing works to create calm from chaos. He helped a client sort through a desk piled with papers, notes, wires, calculators, and bills, some that were time critical to get her children into summer camp.
